Opening

My dog has become skittish. He sticks so close to my side that to move is to trip over him. A well-aimed shove makes no difference. He watches me closely for any sign of trickery, that I might vanish and leave him all alone. Such behaviour in dogs is one of the first signs.

A short time later my father Utiko pulls himself into a sitting position, nods gravely at the dog. “The bones in my hands ache today, far more than usual. We had best prepare with what little time we might have.”

Outside is silent. Too silent. The sky has started to yellow. Everything is still. Too still. The birds and insects have disappeared. There is a coolness creeping into the air. Bumps have appeared on my arms and thighs but there is no time to huddle indoors.
