Book two of the Kaiviti series (but the first book in terms of the setting, which is 1225BC).

A bold story, told completely in first person-present tense from the perspective of adolescent Tay.

IT IS TIME TO REMEMBER INCREDIBLE FEATS FROM ANCIENT TIMES

1225BC, Nendo Island, eastern Solomons: Seeking solitude, Tay skips his daily lessons and hikes across a broken ridgeline to the great rock platform that stands guard over the mysterious eastern sea. The sight of a whale migration, the Vu of his people, is a medicine for the resentments that are increasingly taking hold. He is not who he is supposed to be. Why? She could never love him. She is Tabu.

Three dots appear on the horizon. It is three great sails! He makes haste back to the hamlet to warn the others...

Ancestral is a tale about the Lapita, the greatest seafarers the world had ever seen, and would see for the next 3,000 years. It is a tale of forbidden love, of dangerous times and overcoming the odds, and of forgiveness.

Paragraph One

It is a soothing voice. A familiar voice. She speaks in whispers, calming me, although there is much pain. There is a rhythmic tapping against my skin. It hurts! Yet it is gentle and it coaxes me softly, to surrender to the growing numbness. I cannot see her face as it is hidden in shadow. At trying to reach out, she laughs a gentle laugh. There are words…

‘Dengei,’ she says quietly. ‘Do not worry for you are much loved. You are safe and there is much that watches over you.’

It is a familiar place–a beach of the finest whitest sand, glowing in the morning sun, giving way to a lush forest. A small house of palm fronds, simple yet well built, is set between two coconut trees. It blends into the undergrowth so that one cannot see its beginning or ending. A soft sea breeze runs through it. Against the gentle tapping, the cool wind is fresh on my cheeks.

She starts to sing a sorrowful chant. Her voice is soft but clear, although the words are of another tongue–they are familiar yet I do not know what they mean.

Her voice and the tapping mixes evenly with the pulsing in my veins. It coaxes me slowly into a realisation that I am no longer in her arms on the beach. I am in a place more unfamiliar, the four walls are foreign, the sunlight shines through in places, and just like that, I am awake…
